Blurred Eyes

This is my song of the summer, and to my surprise, I hear it more on the pop stations than urban radio. Now that Robin is on everyone’s playlist, I’m starting to worry about my man’s behavior (disclosure — we once rode the elevator together at MTV).

He’s a genuine crossover success. “Blurred Lines” even scored him a sponsorship deal with RadioShack and Beats by Dre. I’m happy for him.

However, I don’t understand the need for the explicit naked model version of this video or the suggestive speaker-in-bun commercial. The best thing about this song is its beat, an obvious nod to Marvin Gaye’s “Gotta Give It Up.” It’s fun, but visually women are nothing but objects, and that’s a 180-degree turn from much of his catalogue which includes numerous odes to his wife, Paula Patton.

Single man lifestyle is on display here. How does that gel with who Robin and for that matter Pharrell and TI actually are? Each is married or in a long-term relationship. Perhaps I’m analyzing this too much. However, I’m simultaneously right on point. I had someone recently tell me that he can’t wait to become an old man so he can yell at young ladies and say crazy -ish. Maybe that’s what’s happening here. All of these men are about to knock on 40, and they’re reliving younger days. Next time, just include equal opportunity eye candy for the ladies.
